DM – Women who are worriers have to work harder to perform simple tasks than men, and make more mistakes on difficult ones, researchers claim. In a US study, those who suffered from anxiety had distracting thoughts that got in the way of them succeeding. By contrast the men tested showed no signs of anxiety, and didn’t have to work so hard to achieve the same results. A research team at Michigan State University enlisted the help of almost 150 college students, half of them women. An electrode cap was used to measure their brain activity while they performed a simple task, which involved identifying the middle letter in a series of five-letter groups on a computer screen. They were also asked to complete questionnaires rating how much and how often they worried. Although the women who rated themselves as more anxious performed the same as the men on the tasks, researchers discovered their brains had to work harder at it.
Ladies I’m not here to stir the pot for the simple sake of pageviews, unique visitors, ad clicks, Facebook likes, and reader comments…that would be selfish. I’m here to stir the pot because SCIENCE stirred the pot. I consider myself a pretty scientific guy, and see no reason why we should go against a concrete factual scientific study. So what if this research in its entirety was only 150 people playing one problem-solving computer game? It’s RESEARCH. They had brain sensors and shit. It’s official. Women’s brains struggle to think at man-brain speed.
Hey — it’s okay. There are plenty of women who are smarter than men and little girls should grow up knowing that if they work hard they can become anything they want Secretary of State. This doesn’t drastically change anything. BUT, it does prove that when humans of near-equal mental ability come together on a project…you should probably let the men handle the heavy thinking. Best to worry about Nicki Minaj or what .GIF file looks most like your face when your BFF does blah blah blah. It’s science
